Santa Marta & Tayrona

Monday

In the afternoon I arrived to Santa Marta, a city on the coast of Colombia. Shortly after getting into the hostel I headed to the beach. It is called Cabo Tortuga because the mountains have the shape of a turtle. There I swam in the ocean and sat on the beach with my book, watching people come by to sell empanadas, churros, ice cream, and jewelry.

Tuesday

The next day was a tough one. I woke up planning to go to my next hostel about an hours ride away, but there was a bus and taxi strike and the roads were blocked. I spent most of the day doing laundry and counting the minutes because I did not know when the roads would reopen. Eventually I was able to get a ride to the next hostel. It is in the jungle near Parque Tayrona.

Wednesday

After breakfast I went to Parque Tayrona with a girl from the hostel. It was about 3 hours of hiking total, with a stop at the beach!

Thereafter we jumped in the hostel pool and saw a sliver of a sunset. We ended the night doing a group music bingo and playing cards.

Thursday

Today I leave to start a 4-day hike through the rainforest to the Lost City. I won’t have any connection, but I will be back on Sunday with more pictures and stories.
